Filter a Pivot With ONE Click: Pivot Table + Slicer in Excel

Want to Filter a Pivot Report in Excel With a Single Click?

In the slicer video we learned button-based filtering. Now we combine those buttons with a Pivot Table — and watch the report re-summarize itself live as you filter.

First, the Raw Data

An eleven-row sales table: Category, Product, Month and Revenue. Three categories spread across different months — the raw material for our pivot demo.

Building the Pivot: Insert ▸ PivotTable

Inserting a PivotTable opens the field panel. We place the fields:

  • Rows: Category
  • Values: Total Revenue

The pivot computes group totals row by row and writes the Grand Total: $37,300. No formulas, drag-and-drop only — the report skeleton is ready.

What Happens When the Slicer Connects?

We connect a Category slicer and pick Electronics. Here's the critical moment: pivot rows don't fade — they are removed entirely. Clothing and Food rows leave the report and the Grand Total recalculates from 37,300 to 21,500. Adding January in the Month slicer makes the intersection work, and the report shows only "Electronics ∧ January" data.

  • The pivot re-summarizes on filter — rows change, totals recalculate
  • Rows/columns are removed — the Grand Total slides to its new position (real Excel behavior)
  • Intersection filter: category ∧ month work together

Pivot + Slicer = Report Ready

A live report built with drag-and-drop, managed with buttons, zero formulas. Anyone who learns this duo can prepare a weekly sales report in 30 seconds. If you skipped the slicer basics, watch that video first — this one is its direct sequel.
